Abstract

Database storage planning is an important activity in enterprise systems where business data grows continuously through transactions, reports, documents, logs, backups, and historical records. In growing organizations, poor storage planning can lead to performance degradation, backup delays, insufficient disk space, failed transactions, higher infrastructure cost, and difficulty managing long-term data retention. This article discusses how structured storage planning helps database administrators estimate future storage needs based on data volume, table growth, index size, transaction frequency, archive rules, and backup requirements. It explains the role of capacity forecasting, storage monitoring, partitioning, compression, retention policies, backup sizing, and growth trend analysis in maintaining database stability. The article also highlights common challenges such as unexpected data growth, large audit tables, duplicate records, unplanned report data, and weak coordination between application and infrastructure teams. A structured storage planning approach is presented to improve capacity control, reduce operational risk, support performance management, and ensure reliable database operations. The study concludes that effective database storage planning improves scalability, protects business continuity, and supports sustainable management of growing enterprise data.
