Polypharmacy is common among older adults because of the frequent presence of multiple chronic diseases requiring long-term treatment. This study examines the prevalence of polypharmacy and associated drug-related problems among older adults. Medication use is assessed based on the number of prescribed and non-prescribed medicines, treatment duration, dosing schedules, and the presence of multiple healthcare providers. Drug-related problems include adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, duplicate therapy, inappropriate medication use, missed doses, and difficulties with treatment adherence. The findings suggest that increasing numbers of medicines are associated with a greater risk of medication-related complications and reduced treatment safety. Age-related physiological changes and multiple chronic conditions may further increase vulnerability to adverse outcomes. The study highlights the importance of regular medication review, appropriate deprescribing when indicated, patient education, and coordination among healthcare professionals to improve medication safety and reduce preventable drug-related problems among older adults.
