Abstract

Relational database constraints are important for preventing data anomalies because enterprise databases must maintain accurate, consistent, and valid records during insert, update, and delete operations. Constraints define rules that control keys, relationships, mandatory fields, uniqueness, accepted values, and referential links between tables. Existing literature highlights primary key constraints, foreign key constraints, unique constraints, not-null constraints, check constraints, domain rules, and referential integrity as major mechanisms for reducing database errors. However, many organizations still face challenges such as duplicate records, orphan rows, missing mandatory values, invalid entries, update anomalies, and inconsistent relationships caused by weak constraint design. This research is important because data anomalies can affect transaction accuracy, reporting reliability, system integration, and business decision-making. This article discusses relational database constraints for preventing data anomalies, focusing on entity integrity, referential integrity, domain validation, uniqueness control, cascading rules, and constraint enforcement. The study concludes that effective constraint design reduces redundancy, prevents invalid data operations, improves database consistency, and supports reliable enterprise data management.
