Abstract

Rational antibiotic use is essential for effective treatment and for reducing the development of antimicrobial resistance. This study examines knowledge and attitudes toward appropriate antibiotic use among adults. Awareness is assessed through understanding of antibiotic indications, treatment duration, dosage, prescription requirements, side effects, and the consequences of unnecessary or incomplete therapy. Attitudes are evaluated regarding self-medication, sharing antibiotics, stopping treatment after symptom improvement, and using antibiotics for common viral illnesses. The findings suggest that although many individuals recognize the importance of antibiotics, misconceptions regarding their appropriate use remain common. Limited knowledge may contribute to inappropriate self-medication, poor treatment adherence, and unnecessary antibiotic consumption. Positive attitudes toward professional medical advice and completing prescribed courses are associated with safer antibiotic practices. The study highlights the importance of public education, pharmacist counseling, and responsible prescribing strategies to strengthen rational antibiotic use and reduce antimicrobial resistance.
