Abstract

Software test planning is important for mission-critical applications because failures in these systems can affect safety, finance, healthcare, defense, transportation, communication, or essential public services. Mission-critical software requires careful validation of functionality, reliability, security, performance, fault tolerance, recovery behavior, and compliance before deployment. Traditional informal testing is not sufficient because these applications must operate under strict accuracy, availability, and risk-control requirements. This article focuses on software test planning for mission-critical applications by examining test objectives, requirement coverage, risk-based test selection, test environment preparation, failure scenario design, regression planning, security validation, and acceptance criteria. The study discusses how structured test planning can improve defect detection, reduce operational risk, support audit readiness, and strengthen release confidence. The article concludes that effective test planning is essential for ensuring dependable, secure, and high-quality mission-critical software systems.
