Abstract

Backup and recovery strategies are essential for enterprise databases because organizations depend on continuous access to accurate and secure business data. Enterprise databases support critical operations such as financial transactions, customer management, inventory control, reporting, and regulatory compliance, making data loss or downtime highly risky. Existing literature highlights full backup, incremental backup, differential backup, transaction log backup, point-in-time recovery, replication, disaster recovery planning, and recovery testing as major methods for database protection. However, many organizations still face challenges such as backup failure, slow recovery time, storage limitations, ransomware threats, hardware failure, human error, and weak disaster recovery validation. This research is important because ineffective backup and recovery practices can lead to operational disruption, financial loss, compliance failure, and loss of organizational trust. This article discusses backup and recovery strategies for enterprise databases, focusing on backup scheduling, recovery point objectives, recovery time objectives, transaction log management, off-site storage, cloud backup, replication, and recovery testing. The study concludes that a well-planned backup and recovery strategy improves data availability, reduces downtime, strengthens business continuity, and protects enterprise databases from accidental, technical, and security-related failures.
